In 2008 landfill tax will increase to £32/tonne. This increase will have to be passed on by waste management companies. For organisations and businesses that produce large volumes of kitchen waste, it makes more sense than ever to compost their own waste.
New to the UK, the JK5100 is designed to handle 50Kg or 100litres of kitchen waste per day and is fully compliant with the animal by-products regulations (ABPR) including the treatment of catering waste that includes meat.
Click here for the DEFRA official guidance notes.
This table shows the main regulatory requirements for composting category 3 catering waste that includes meat. (Note: Many organisations may only need to comply with the home composting requirements).

JK5100 feature
Closed Vessel
Insulated stainless steel construction for reliable robustness and to ensure high levels of hygiene.
Particle size
Waste is loaded into the machine's hopper. Wood pellets can be added automatically. The mixture is then automatically ground and particle size adjusted if required before the machine discharges the mixture into the first composting chamber.
Aerobic conditions
The unit mixes the compost via its programmable control unit. This also controls ventilation and aeration through the fan system to ensure maximum efficiency.
2 stages
Two composting chambers allows the flexibility to ensure compost is delivered only when ready. The first stage takes about 2 weeks with finished compost available after another 2 weeks.
Separate/distinct vessels
Material is automatically delivered to the second ripening chamber which is monitored and managed in complete isolation to the first. This allows the finished compost to be harvested only when ready.
Temperature/time
The temperatures reached in the vessels mean minimum thresholds are met. Temperature data loggers can be fitted and connected to a PC to store and manage the data.
Installation
The JK 5100 composter requires:
- a frost-proof site (usually indoors)
- a 3 phase 16 amp electricity supply (to be provided by the purchaser)
- provision for venting circulated air
Its overall dimensions are 3 m long x 1.24 m wide x 1.505 m high and it requires access on all four sides. The unit's integral fan can exhaust the unit either directly to the outside by means of a pipe, or into the sewer system.
