Features explained
Rodent Proof
The JK 125/270 can be wall mounted or is free standing on its own stand. Being off the ground, it is not possible for rodents to access your garden waste.
|
Horizontal rotating drum.
This design makes it easy to mix the waste or compost without breaking your back. Simply turn the composter by hand every time you put waste in. Why is mixing so important?
Ensuring air in the mixture allows the right bacteria and microbes to multiply quickly thus maximising the efficiency of the composting process.
Mixing also ensures all parts of the waste has contact with the right bacteria.
Depriving the waste of air encourages bacteria that produce bad smells.

Insulation
The composting process produces heat, as much as 75 degrees centigrade. This is enough to kill most pathogens and weed seeds. Insulation allows these high temperatures to be maintained and encourages the microbes that break down the waste quickest. Inevitably, the process slows down in winter but the insulation allows the JK125/270 to continue working long after other composters and wormeries have stopped.

Dual Compartments
Whilst the empty compartment is being filled, compost is maturing in the other compartment. The mature compost is then emptied and the process can start again. It takes between 6 to 8 weeks from beginning of the process to the finished compost. See how easy it is to empty and fill the composter by watching these clips.

Raw or cooked food scraps including meat, fish and vegetables.
Garden waste except hard woody stems or branches.
Cardboard including egg cartons.
Hamster and rabbit bedding.
Any biodegradable material.
In addition to your kitchen waste, you must add a form of carbon such as wood pellets or sawdust. This provides the bacteria and microbes the energy they need to work at such high temperatures and it also absorbes excess moisture. Add 1 part wood pellets to 10 parts waste or 1 to 3 for sawdust. Coir also works well as does dry leaves or dry chopped straw. Click here to buy wood pellets.
Wood shavings do not work so well because they are not as absorbant as pellets or sawdust. Wood chippings are best used as mulch or added to a conventional compost heap as they take a long time to decompose.
Cat owners please note. Cat litter is also available in the form of wood pellets, so this is a great way of disposing of your cat waste.

Suitable for
|
Smaller households 4 to 6 people for kitchen waste only.
Could be less depending on how much waste is generated eg garden waste can add substantial volumes.
|
Larger households, schools, guest houses, small restaurants, day nurseries, care homes, etc., (depending on how much waste is generated, these establishments could consider having more than one unit).
|
Tip: Don't forget that it is best to add material little but often. If you have a lot of grass cuttings, it may be best to compost these separately or use it as a mulch, otherwise you will have no room for your kitchen waste! Adding grass cuttings in small quantities is fine.
